Strategic Problem Solving

the strategic problem solver is like an espert sailer
that, in the middle of the ocean, tries to forecast
and plan the own actions on the basis of
the conditions of the sea in that moment.
He has to forecast the arising of unespected events
and prepare himself to cope with them trusting only
on his"operative awareness", not on the absolute
control of the events. Not only, but he does not know
and can't know neither the deep truth of the sea
nor the cause of its changes. Nevertheless
with this knowledge limited to "as to make"
she crosses the oceans and she faces the storms, always
adapting his actions to the occurring of the events.

The Strategic Problem Solving can be defined as the " art to solve the complicated personal, interpersonal and organizations" problems(community, companies, etc) , by means of tactics and techniques, with the maximum effectiveness (problem solution) and efficiency (used time and efforts).

The strategic problem solving is based on a precise and rigorous logical model of intervention, referring to that branch of mathematical Logic known as "strategic Logic", to the theory of the communication born in anthropological field with G. Bateson, to the constructivist developments of the cybernetic theory (H. von Foerster, and von Glasersfeld), to the studies on the language of persuasion by Milton Erickson and to the contribution of the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto (P. Watzlawick, Weakland, Fisch, Jackson) is due to the work of widening and systematization of the
theoretical application-oriented principles of the communication.

A further application-oriented contribution has been brought by Giorgio Nardone (The Art of Change go, Jossey - Bass, San Francisco, USA 1990- Terapia Breve Strategica go, Raffaello Cortina 1997 with Paul Watzlawick, "La terapia dell'azienda malatago" 2000), who has organized with a rigorous procedure of empiricist-experimental research of strategic intervention protocols for specific clinical problems creating a new advanced model.

The success in clinical field, the extreme flexibility of the model, the increasing of the demands of managerial supervision, training and consulting in the organizations have oriented the research also in wider interpersonal contexts as the social, educational and business one. The outcome of this work is the new specific protocol for particular pathologies of problems within the "organizations" and the elaboration of particular techniques, tactics and strategies.

The intervention model is divided in the following essential stages:

· identification of the objective to be achieved

· Analysis of the attempted solutions

· Definition of the problem to be solved

· Application of the strategy

· Measurement of the effects and possible strategy

· Closing of the intervention.

The use of the strategic communication in its twofold possibility (explicative or persuasive) is moreover a fundamental instrument in the intervention application (direct, indirect, supervision, training, etc..).

'... The problem-solver will have at his disposal a whole of tactics and flexible, adaptable instruments to the different situations to be faced... "
